What’s the Point of a Coffee Roaster That Dropships But Won’t Do Custom Roasts?

Ah, coffee. The magical bean juice that keeps the world from collapsing into a collective morning grumble. As a business owner, you’d think sourcing high-quality coffee should be easy, right? I mean, in this golden age of convenience, where I can have a pizza, a llama, and a life-size cardboard cutout of Nicolas Cage delivered to my doorstep within 24 hours, surely getting a custom coffee roast isn’t too much to ask.

But no. Apparently, some coffee roasters out there have mastered the art of dropshipping—so they’ll gladly send their standard, cookie-cutter roasts directly to customers—but the moment you ask for a custom blend, suddenly, they act like you just asked them to invent cold fusion in their back room.

The Great Coffee Roasting Paradox

Let’s break this down. You’re a coffee roaster. You roast coffee. You ship coffee. You make money from people who want coffee. Business is booming! And then someone like me comes along, an eager business owner who doesn’t just want coffee, but wants to stand out. Maybe I want to craft a house blend that sings with notes of caramel and rebellion. Maybe I need a darker roast so deep it contemplates the meaning of existence before every sip. Maybe my customers demand a milder blend because their souls are already burdened by the weight of Monday mornings.

And yet, you, dear coffee roaster, have drawn the line. You can ship your generic roasts across the globe, but the idea of tweaking a blend for businesses who literally want to pay you for it is just too much? Especially when said business is trying to ramp up business-to-business custom roasts or sell the custom blends by the bag of either 250g, 500g, or 1kg.

Why Though?

Look, I get it. Custom roasting requires effort. You might have to fire up the roaster, take a few extra notes, maybe even—gasp—engage with a human being. But isn’t that the fun part? Isn’t that the very essence of coffee roasting? You’re already doing the work! A tiny tweak in the process and—boom—you could be the go-to supplier for businesses that want something unique. More sales, more partnerships, more coffee-fueled capitalism!

Yet, here we are. Stuck in the bizarre reality where coffee roasters have figured out how to automate shipping but refuse to embrace the customization that could make them even more valuable. It’s like a pizzeria saying, “We’ll deliver pizza, but no toppings. You get cheese, and that’s it. Pepperoni? You ask too much.”

We Love Our Roasters, But Come On…

Now, to be clear, our current roasters produce some absolutely fantastic coffee and tea. No complaints there. The quality is top-tier, the flavors are amazing, and we appreciate their work. But their absolute refusal to allow custom roasts? That’s where we start scratching our heads. It feels a little like having a Michelin-star chef who refuses to make a steak anything but well-done. Sure, we still enjoy what they offer—but why impose an unnecessary limit when there’s demand for something even better?

The Call to Action: Be Better, Roasters!

To all the coffee roasters out there who drop ship but won’t custom roast: why?

You could be making businesses like mine ecstatic with signature blends. You could be creating brand loyalty stronger than a triple espresso. You could be fueling the coffee revolution one personalized bag at a time. Instead, you’re leaving money—and really good coffee—on the table.

So please, reconsider. Until then, I guess I’ll go back to searching for a supplier who actually wants my money. And maybe that life-size Nicolas Cage cutout.
